If someone is seeking the Reference style performance but needs the versatility for classical use, we recommend in stead the Series II with the Series III Goldbrass neck. The Reference is the ultimate Jazz/Funk/Blues/Rock/Fusion/etc. However, the new bore of the Reference 54 does not lend itself towards Classical music. The Reference line are built in the spirit of the famous Mark VI which was released in 1954. The Flamingo is from the limited edition ReferenceBird Series by Selmer Paris. Overall, we find that the Reference 54 is a great horn. This is a beautiful example of Selmer Paris Reference 54 Flamingo alto sax, serial number 712283. The end result is a horn that has the vintage style tonal "core" of the Mark VI but with the mechanical design and intonation of a modern horn. For the alto specifically, the Mark VI.The Reference 54 gains its name as they refer to 1954, the year Mark VI production started, as their inspiration for the tone and playing characteristics for the Reference 54 alto. The Series II and Series III are both great modern horns, but many players still wanted the tonal performance of the 1950's vintage Selmers. Selmer realized that players wanted more options and wanted these playing options with the quality provided by Selmer Paris. Selmer had gone from being a manufacturer who made only 1 professional model saxophone to making concurrently 3 different models of alto saxophone. This make the current lineup of Selmer Paris alto saxes as follows: Axos, Super Action 80 Serie II, Serie III & Supreme. The Supreme effectively replaces it in their lineup.

There are no dents or dings, and no resolders. The only real wear is some light surface scratching on the bottom bow and bell, the kind you only see in the right light. This horn was played only as a store demo horn, and is in excellent physical condition.

The Reference 54 was the completion of the modern Selmer alto design concepts. Update Selmer was so pleased with the result of the Supreme and the artist feedback that they have now discontinued the Reference 54 alto sax. This is a Selmer Reference 54 alto sax, serial number 653704. Please keep future posts here directly related to sales/posts which will help the sale.Released in 2003. I've split out all the OT posts into the OT forum. The reference altos are essentially a MkVI with modern keywork. The Ref 54 is billed as inspired by the Mark VI. The Series II’s and III’s can be quite frustrating in the mouthpiece department. It’s the only alto Selmer currently makes that tunes easily with a Meyer or other typical jazz mouthpiece.

The sax has been well loved and cared for by its previous owner, the sax has been serviced and ready for its next owner. There may be some confusion over model/designation - the altos were only made as reference models, this is the alto equivalent to the Ref 54 Tenor (Ref 36 Tenor was not available as a Kookaburra). The Reference 54 is my favorite modern Selmer without any question. Here we have a 2018 made Ref 54 in the Vintage finish. This is one of the standard ones which were made in 2006 only, about 330 were made according to web sources. Any body interested in buying my Selmer Ref 54 Kookabora Alto sax, I have owned it for approx 3 or 4 years and it has spent most of its life with me sleeping in its original case, I tend to use my 62 and didn't want to go scratching it around the neck strap ring, it plays perfectly and it was serviced earlier this year by Steve Crow in Leeds a guy who specialises in saxophones, there is some spotting under the lacquer but very minor and some slight tarnish in the engraving, I will try to post some pics later, the asking price is £2500 and at that I'm losing £300 plus I will throw in free delivery and 5% to the charity.
